.As fans flock to live stream chats hoping to get noticed by their favourite YouTubers, the chat box quickly loses functionality. In a blink of an eye 100 comments can easily be missed, as chat streams become flickers, and emoji’s become the only discernible content. Knowing this is a problem for viewers who want to interact with their favourite creators, YouTube pounced on the opportunity to monetise this demand. Creating “YouTube Super Chat”.
Overall, I understand that SuperChat is simple to do, but I have gotten donations from my viewers under the promise of using those funds to improve the stream quality, and its very hard to do that when such a massive cut is taken out from YouTube compared to other options and it takes so damn long to get the money. YouTube announced a new feature today aimed at helping creators make money while connecting with their fans during a live stream: Super Chat. The addition is reminiscent of streaming site Twitch.
- The cheapest SuperChat will appear in dark blue, and the second cheapest will be light blue. This progresses to green, then yellow, orange, magenta, and finally, a red SuperChat for the big spenders. Red SuperChat messages start at around $100! Super Chat payments can range between $1 and $500 each. YouTube takes 30% of the revenue, and this isn’t considering any apple service fees, tax, MCN cuts or other charges.
How Creators Can Use Super Chat
Larger YouTubers whose fans find it difficult to get attention will likely benefit from this feature the most. Whereas smaller YouTuber’s live chats are likely to be less cluttered, so viewers won’t find it as difficult to have their normal comment read – reducing the incentive to pay for this feature.
If you are a small YouTuber, that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth trailing however. There are a few things you could can do to increase your Super Chats and better monetise your live streams.

Promote Your Live Streams
The more people there are watching your live stream in real-time, the more likely you are to receive super chat donations. It’s important therefore that you let your audience know about your live stream beforehand. Promote it in videos, let them know on social media, host the live stream at a convenient time for your viewers, and do your best to get the most live viewers you can.
Include A Q&A Section
Give your viewers an incentive to have their comment read by providing them with value back, in this case; in the form of an answer to their question. Ask your viewers for questions during the chat, and ensure that you answer the questions of your super chat users.
Provide Content Incentives

Give your viewers a reason to donate by providing them with an incentive. This could be in the form of a new piece of content, continuing your live stream, or providing content within the live stream that they find valuable. Or it may just be a shout out and thank you to the person who has made the donation.
Critiques Of Super Chat
Live stream chats were originally designed to help foster relationships between creators and their community in an egalitarian way. All viewers were provided the same opportunity to have their message read. The introduction of Super Chat removes this even playing field. Giving viewers who are willing to open their wallets a higher chance of having their voices heard.
Smaller YouTubers who are most often in need of the monetary support, likely won’t benefit from this feature nearly as much as their larger counterparts. Smaller creators with smaller fan bases will find their livestream chats easier to read and interact with – so viewers will be less likely to donate.
