Adventure International advertisement from the March 1983 issue of 80-U.S. Journal
Sea Dragon, written by Wayne Westmoreland and Terry Gilman, was one of the most popular games for the TRS-80. It was released in 1982 by Adventure International, which also sold versions for other computers:
- the Apple II version, written by John Anderson, was released in 1982.
- the Atari 400/800 version, written by Russ Wetmore (Star Systems Software), was released in 1982.
- the TRS-80 Color Computer version, written by Jim Hurd (Coniah Software), was released in 1983.
- the IBM PC version, written by Dan Rollins, was released in 1983.
- the Commodore 64 version, written by David H. Simmons, was released in 1984.
As far as I know, Sea Dragon was the TRS-80 game that was adapted to the most computers.
According to Wayne Westmoreland, Sea Dragon was inspired by the arcade game Scramble Online casino cyprus. , which was released in 1981. The ending of the game (which involves destroying a nuclear reactor) was inspired by the arcade game Phoenix, released in 1980. Of all the TRS-80 games that he and Terry Gilman wrote, Sea Dragon was his favorite.
Underwater mines
Sea Dragon was described this way in a 1982 Adventure International catalog:
Sea Dragon is a slick, arcade-ish simulation that puts you in commandof a nuclear sub that’s armed to the hilt with deadly missiles andtorpedoes. You guide your submarine past underwater mountains andthrough labyrinthine passages while avoiding webs of explosive minesthat rise from the sea bottom. Additional dangers includemine-dropping ships, enemy attack stations, falling stalactites, anddeadly lasers—any of which could keep you from your ultimate goal:destruction of the incredibly powerful nuclear reactor at the end ofthe undersea course! Video poker house edge. Maneuver around these dangerous obstacles andsurface to refuel your ever-decreasing air supply—if you can!
Falling stalactites and lasers
The playing field of Sea Dragon scrolls horizontally and is very wide; one advertisement described it as “the equivalent of two dozen screens laid end-to-end.” The goal is to pilot the submarine to the very end and destroy the nuclear reactor found there.
Colliding with an underwater mine destroys the submarine, as does hitting the ground or any of the other obstacles in the water. Another complication results from the need of the submarine to surface periodically and replenish the air supply. This creates a problem when the game moves into a series of underwater passages with no open air.
Sea Dragon was one of the original games featured on the scoreboard in “The Gamer’s Cafe,” and it was often mentioned in the column. Long-time readers of “The Gamer’s Cafe” may remember that Sea Dragon played a pivotal role in the departure of Winthrop from the column.
Nuclear reactor at end of game
Like most of the Adventure International games, the various versions of Sea Dragon differ in some details. Several have enhancements specific to that version, such as the voice effects in the Apple II and TRS-80 Color Computer versions. (And who can forget the dancing sailor from the title screen of the Color Computer version!) But the game play and the look of the games remained quite close to the TRS-80 original.

In the deepest waters of the sea, another dragon breathed, twisting the waters themselves into tentacled horrors that rose from every lake and river of the land.
— The Movement of the World
Scholars have long debated the possible existence of an as-of-yet unnamed Elder Dragon deep in the Unending Ocean, referred to by Taimi as the water dragon.[1] Unlike the other Elder Dragons, its influence has not yet been directly felt in Central Tyria, although nameless 'horrors' speculated to be the minions of the deep sea dragon have in recent years displaced the krait from their ancestral homelands.
Members of the Pact and Dragon's Watch are aware of this dragon's existence and approximate location,[2][3] as they refer to it by the name deep sea dragon.[4] Others, even those as powerful as ImperatorBangar Ruinbringer, are not aware of its existence.[5]

Most of what is known about this dragon comes from the Scroll of the Five True Gods; unfortunately its entry is partially missing.[4]

Name[edit]
According to the Tome of the Five True Gods, the name of this dragon begins with the letter S, although this is not uncontroversial within the Durmand Priory.[4][6]Taimi has implied in the past that she knows its full name, but that she could not quite remember it.[2]
Biography[edit]
Early years[edit]
The deep sea dragon, like the other Elder Dragons, is assumed to have last awakened 10,000 years ago, around the time of the disappearance of the Great Giants, and then fallen back into slumber after consuming all the world's available magic.

Date of Awakening[edit]
The effects of the deep sea dragon's influence were first felt when the krait suddenly and unexpectedly erupted into quaggan lands around 50 years ago, circa 1275 AE, invading their territory and destroying their civilization and seemingly killing their goddess Mellaggan.[7][8] Given that Elder Dragons had been awakening at approximately 50-year intervals, and the fact that the krait did not do so by choice,[9] it has been speculated that the krait were fleeing the newly-awakened deep sea dragon.
However, the cinematic during The Machine depicts the Elder Dragons as parts of The All, each of them represented as an orb.[10] Assuming the placement of the orbs corresponds with the placement of the Elder Dragons in the Durmand Priory's map of The All, and making sensible assumptions about which color corresponds to each dragon's magical domain, the orbs in the cinematic light up in the following order:
- Orange/red (assumed to be Primordus—time of awakening 1120 AE)
- Blue (assumed to be the deep sea dragon—previously assumed to have awakened in c. 1275 AE)
- White (assumed to be Jormag—time of awakening 1165 AE[11])
- Dark green (assumed to be Zhaitan—time of awakening 1219 AE)
- Purple (assumed to be Kralkatorrik—time of awakening 1320 AE)
- Lime green (assumed to be Mordremoth—time of awakening 1327 AE)
In City of Hope, minions of every dragon except the deep sea dragon are fought in the same sequence as in the cinematic (where a minion of the deep sea dragon presumably would have been fought, the player instead has to contend with springs of damaging salt water that erupt from the ground). Some suspect this represents the order of awakening, which would mean that the deep sea dragon awakened sometime between Primordus and Jormag, much earlier than previously thought.
Despite this, there are several sources which explicitly state that Jormag, not the deep sea dragon, was the second Elder Dragon to awaken, although these sources do predate the Living World and expansions in which the above content appear.[11][12]
Recent developments[edit]
Spoiler alert: The following text contains spoilers relating to Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns and Guild Wars 2: Path of Fire.
According to Master Sdias, there are 'horrors' in the largos homelands in the ocean deeps. These are speculated to be the minions of the deep sea dragon.
In 1325 AE, the Inquest captured a minion of the deep sea dragon and were preparing a water-themed area called 'Zone Blue' in the Infinite Coil Reactor for it to be stored in before the Reactor's destruction.[13] Later that year, the aquatic karka migrated to the island of Southsun Cove in the Sea of Sorrows, having fled their home due to the Elder Dragons.[14] The karka are, however, also known to have had a presence on the Ring of Fire islands dating back to at least the rising of Orr.[15]

In 1330 AE, the Pact Commander was subjected to a vision while exploring the Forgotten city of Kesho deep in the Elon Riverlands. In this vision, which explained the purpose of Glint's legacy to replace the ravenous Elder Dragons with more benevolent balancers of magic, the Commander briefly saw a menacing glimpse of what may have been the deep sea dragon.
In 1332 AE, Taimi wrote that Canthan and Elonian sailors had recounted tales of strange creatures heretofore unknown emerging from the oceans, possibly tied to this dragon's resurgence.[1] She also speculated that the dragon might possess a degree of control over water and the oceans. The Pact Commander did not see any evidence of these creatures during their recent campaign in Elona, however.

The following pieces of concept art are speculated to be of subjects related to the deep sea dragon.
- Untitled concept art by Kekai Kotaki.
- 'Leviathan' by Jaime Jones.
- 'Tsunami' by Daniel Dociu.
Trivia[edit]
- The lack of information about the deep sea dragon is meant to give a sense of foreboding for the open oceans.[16]
- While its existence and exact nature are not well-known to the average Tyrian, the deep sea dragon 'shares with its kindred the desire to consume, corrupt, and destroy.'[17]
- Due to the lack of an official name, players tend to refer to the dragon as the 'deep sea dragon' (or DSD for short), a name that has now been used by characters in-game.[4] Another popular nickname was 'Bubbles', but after learning the dragon's name could begin with the letter S, the nicknames 'Steve' and 'Selbbub' (bubbles backwards) have become popularised.
